The Crocodile River Model

I believe that there is always a gap between our ASSUMED READINESS (our polices, plans, procedures and self belief) and our OBSERVED BEHAVIOUR (how we actually perform when the pressure is on).

I also believe that the gap will always be revealed – it is your choice as to whether it is revealed on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow, or in a scenario-based exercise today.

I have created the Crocodile River Model as a way to explain how organisations or teams perform when the pressure is on.

The boat represents the organisation as a whole, or one of the groups or teams within the organisation.  The boat must navigate the gap (the river), while dealing with everyday pressures (the river current) and risks (the crocodiles) we all face.  The model also explains why governance is up on the cliff, not in the boat.
